Types of Fae

SEELIE ONLY

BROWNIE

A small fairy being that helps out with household chores during the night in exchange for room and board. All brownies are dainty and small in appearance. They are often described as dainty, delicate of bone and/or dandy. They are free-spirits and very clean. They take great pleasure in a warm bed or a hot bath.

Be careful, though, because these creatures are honorable gits. Kick them out of a bed or home they've earned, and a brownie will take revenge. They are not malicious spirits, but they have a sense of balance and justice. They will destroy a home that they feel they have been wrongfully turned out from.

Brownies do have a fairy form. They have a set of wings that have been glamoured away when they are among humans. Their wings can be of a many variety of colors, but are a transparent, dragonfly-like shape. No fairies in this Story line have a tiny Tinkerbell form. While they are small, they are not thumb-sized. They are just tiny humans (not necessarily midgets, but sometimes).

DWARF

In Scandinavian folklore a dwarf is a short, stocky humanoid that lives underground or within large stones called dwarf-stones. They can be beardless and not ugly, or they may be described as old, bearded, and wrinkled, the Dwarf-King Hibich had a long beard with magical powers. Dwarf characters will not be the conventional long-legged, slender model pretty that most people like to choose for pbs.

They are benevolent and kind, known to offer magical solutions to those in distress but they will not hesitate to take back their gifts from the undeserving. Their magical powers are limited, and often among a more natural remedy. For instance, giving money to the poor, creating food supplies for the hungry, or producing magical herbs to heal the sick.

Dwarves are excellent smiths with the ability to create objects with magical qualities such as knifes so sharp that they can cut through anything they touch. These objects are highly valued and useful but often carry a curse of some kind. It was from dwarves that men first learned to hammer steel while it was hot, then harden it in water.

They wear magical belts, caps, cloaks or rings which are the source of all their power. If his belt is taken from him, a dwarf will trade his treasure for its return. When creating a dwarf character, pick one item where your character stores their power. This item will be more valuable to you then anything you own. Without it, you will be powerless and nothing more then a stocky, belligerent human. **Character's approval is subject to PB check.

GOBLIN

A goblin (or Robin Goblin or hobgoblin) is small and mischievous. In appearance, they resemble a small child with the face of an old man (dwarfism). Goblins were originally house spirits that did more good than evil as long as they were respected and well fed (see Brownie). They would choose one family to live with, and while staying hidden they performed all sorts of services for the family such as household chores and other tasks. Later, due to ungrateful hosts, goblins became more sinister. They are known to haunt a location and cause mayhem in small doses.

Goblins aren't stupid creatures. They know, for instance, that living among humans, they can't go too far with their antics or risk being exposed and killed. That isn't to say, though, that a goblin won't run into town and cause havoc in small doses. They are also known to be disorderly and creatures of filth, often living in garbage or unsanitary conditions.

PIXIE

When most people picture the ideal form of a fairy, they are often picturing a pixie. Pixie's are small, winged creatures who inhabit ancient underground ancestor sites such as stone circles, barrows, quoits, rounds or standing stones.

In traditional lore, they are generally benign, mischievous, short of stature and attractively childlike in nature; they are fond of dancing and gathering outdoors in huge numbers to dance, or sometimes wrestle, through the night. They have pointed ears, their eyes are slightly pointed upwards at the temple ends.

Oona from Legend would be a Pixie, as well as Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. They are capable of turning into a small blink of light and then later appearing as a full-sized male or woman. They are comely with fierce hearts, full of passion and overflowing with raw energy or emotion.

Pixies possess heavy glamour magic, being able to make people see what they want them to see and have the ability to cause minor diseases (like rashes or common colds). The term being "pixed" came from irate pixies punishing humans (often times for ruining their homes or nature).

PUCA

According to legend, the puca is a deft shape shifter, capable of assuming a variety of terrifying or pleasing forms, and may appear as a horse, rabbit, goat, goblin [See Goblin for humanoid appearance] or dog. No matter what shape the puca takes, its fur is almost always dark. It most commonly takes the form of a sleek black horse with a flowing mane and luminescent golden eyes.

If a human is enticed onto a puca's back, it has been known to give them a wild ride, though unlike a kelpie, which will take its rider and dive into the nearest stream or lake to drown and devour him/her, the puca will do its rider no real harm. The puca has the power of human speech, and has been known to give advice and lead people away from harm. Though the puca enjoys confusing and often terrifying humans, it is considered to be benevolent. Since a puca is rarely in human form, this character is not playable unless you can come up with a reason why they are running around mainly in human form.

Allergic to silver as well as to iron.

UNSEELIE ONLY

ADHENE

The Adhene are Manx fairies, also known as Cloan ny moyrn which means Children of the pride or ambition.

They live in the earth, the air, and the sea. They are shy, and most of them are female. You can see them playing in waterfalls and dancing on the tops of mountains. They are beautiful, and mischievous, but mostly benevolent, however there are those who are more sinister than most.

The malevolent fairies live apart from the others in caverns, heavy fogs, and other dark places. They delight in causing misery but it is believed that they cannot harm a person on an errand of mercy.

Cannot harm someone on an errand of mercy. Special Weakness for fire.

CHANGELING

Unlike the name would suggest, changelings do not run around switching forms between creatures. They assume the form of one target. In myth, they were often the replacement to a child that was kidnapped and taken to the fairy world. In actuality, changelings are mimics. They choose one person to imitate and often hide that person so no one will know the difference and assume their place and life. The person they assume the shape of is where they draw sustenance, so they often have to keep their supposed hidden identity somewhere close by. The purpose of this is so no one will become suspicious as they slowly drink the soul of their host. A host can last them upward of ten years before depleting and dying. Changelings hosts are not immortal and they always perish. So a changeling, being a creature who is immortal unless they are killed or starve, must find a new host immediately when one begins to deplete for fear of starving to death. They starve very quickly. **Requires host in backstory if you want to play one (so you must have a backstory for your fairy in specific AND the person who you've taken the place of).

Changelings hosts are not immortal and they always perish. So a changeling, being a creature who is immortal unless they are killed or starve, must find a new host immediately when one begins to deplete for fear of starving to death. INCUBI/SUCCUBI

Also known as an incubus or succubus. This is a type of fairy that can invade dreams and alter them. They usually appear as a sexual creature because they can feed off of sexual energy or fear and sustain themselves. Outside of dreams, they have a natural ability to inflict pain or pleasure but this requires physical skin to skin contact to do. This can become more intense for someone who's already lusting after them or already afraid of them, because it is amplified by a person's natural chemistry toward the fae. These fae are usually extremely attractive and usually have a striking enough appearance that they might become something others dream about naturally (thus inviting them in).

NYMPH

A nymph is a minor female nature deity typically associated with a particular location or landform. There are 5 different types of nymphs, Celestial Nymphs, Sea Nymphs, Land Nymphs, Wood Nymphs and Underworld Nymphs. Nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing; their amorous free-spirited temperaments are widely known. They are believed to dwell in mountains and groves, by springs and rivers, and also in trees and in valleys and cool grottoes. Although they would never die of old age nor illness, and could give birth to fully immortal children if mated to a god, they themselves were not necessarily immortal, and could be beholden to death in various forms.

They are different from Nature Spirits in the sense that they don't really embody a specific thing. They animate nature. In other words, instead of embodying all things fertility, they may inspire a random flower to grow or a tree to have new life. They might turn around and decide to make dew appear or waters to become tranquil.

The term nymphomaniac or nympho is derived from their amorous nature. Nymphs are often free-lovers and prone to hedonism, because of this the Seelie don't trust them to abide by their strict purity laws, casting them to the Unseelie.

TROLL

A hairy misshapen being that lives primarily underground. They are often described as giants, tall and unsightly. Most people think of Lord of the Rings when they think of trolls, but they don't actually eat humans. Their bad reputation with humans generally comes from human's fear of their appearance and their intolerance for loud noises. They have extremely sensitive hearing, rendering them terrified of thunder. Noises known to rile up trolls, for example, would be some like drums, the ringing of church bells, and the sounds of racket on bridges (causing many a legend).

They are shapeshifters, can become invisible, can see the future, bestow wealth or take it away, and grant superhuman strength to anyone. They will do business with men including lending money, but should never be fully trusted. They steal women and children, poison men, and have other bad habits.

Since Trolls are absolutely intolerant of loud noises, a city is the last place you will ever see one. So, these are not a playable race.

EITHER SEELIE OR UNSEELIE

BANSHEE

The Banshee, also known as Bean Sidhe, white woman, and Shee Frogh or house fairy is a fairy spirit who's appearance is usually an omen of death. In legends she wails or sings when someone is about to die. In Scotland they were seen washing the blood stained garments of the person who is about to die and crying. They appear in many cultures including Welsh, Norse, and American myth.

The banshee may also appear in a variety of other forms, such as that of a hooded crow, stoat, hare or weasel. This fairy is a type of wraith, often of a woman who died tragically, or a mother who died in childbirth.

Often her singing or keening is meant to draw the soul of the one dying to the other world, helping them cross into the after life.

The most common trait of a banshee is her piercing wail. This wail can only be perceived by the one for whom the death omen is meant, others will only hear a sound resembling the melancholy moaning of the wind.

A banshee is almost always female in appearance, usually old and thin with long scraggly hair and white robes, but sometimes she a young woman with long flaxen hair, hence the nicknames.

Though this type of fairy exists, and your fairy if they know anything of their history would know about them, this is not a common type of fairy. Requires moderator approval due to rarity and nature of fairy.

Upon getting a feeling that someone is about to die, they can not resist going to wail their death song. Characters should play this as an unpleasant compulsion.

DRYAD

A forest nymph, each one born to live with and protect a certain tree eventually becoming a tree themselves. They are normally considered to be very shy creatures, except around their own kind. Though they are often referred to as nymphs, they are not to be mistaken as the amorous nymphs listed as it's own race. They ones may be amorous to someone who earns their trust, but they are way less embracing of those they don't know.

If the tree they are protecting gets damaged or dies, they take on it's injuries. A death of their sacred tree will forever leave this type of fairy depleted and a shadow of it's former self.

ELEMENTAL

An elemental is a nature spirit that represents one of the four classical elements in ancient Greek philosophy and science. Earth is represented by gnomes, fire by salamanders, air by sylphs, and water by undines.

Each elemental is a living being that represents and is responsible for one of the many forces of nature. Humans that possess abilities over the elements, whether they know it or not, are blessed by the elementals. A pyrokinetic, for instance, has been kissed upon the brow by a fire salamander in their crib (often leaving a mark but not always). A gift like this must be approved by moderation if bestowed.

In other words, there are a large number of spirits working to keep nature in balance, each one with its own characteristics and degree of responsibility ranging from great to small.

Each elemental lives exclusively within its own element, and appears as a beacon of it's element, the gnomes are odd and misshapen while the others are delicate and beautiful.

Under certain circumstances humans can communicate with or even command elementals, gnomes are the easiest to communicate with, while undines and sylphs are more challenging, and salamanders are the most difficult.

To command an elemental, you must develop a deep understanding and love for the true nature of the element, and have the ability to enter the element and then become a superior force within that element rather than a mere form.

They are mischievous and may masquerade as souls of the dead.

ELF

An elf (aslo known as alves, ellefolk, grove folk, erls, and mannikins) is a mythical being with magical powers with pointed ears. Elves tend to be slender, graceful and artistic. They are tall, slender, and notably fine boned and fair of face. They are comely. They are not immortal but they do live for a very long time.

Both good and evil exists within each group of elf. They are not unlike humans in the sense that they are neither inherently benign or evil. The ability to reproduce with humans (and other beings) is common among dark elves only. This has been a great divide between the elves, and the two parties do not get along. Dark Elves keep to the Unseelie and Light Elves stay with the Seelie.

Because of a finer attuned connection to earth magic, elves have the ability to make sure their offspring are all elven. This practice is only still alive in the Seelie Court, because the Dark Elves broke away to try to diversify the species. The Seelie Elves are slowly dying off due to this obsession with purity.

In general, elves keep themselves out of human affairs, but in rare cases (when they are greatly offended or greatly pleased) their involvement may be more profound. For example, they can both cause and cure serious diseases. Any disease that causes twisting or withering of the body may be associated with elves as well as certain skin diseases and fertility problems. A few specific examples include stroke, scoliosis, paralysis, and infertility.

To appease offended elves you must show a grand respect for your environment, including all of nature and the little things that live and grow, as well as yours and your personal living space.

In character creation, an elf can be fairly old and possess subtle earth magic. All magic must be discussed with moderation at the point of character creation to make sure that we're not power playing. Elves are a regal folk, and characters will be expected to be more poised then a human with a vast sense of responsibility for the balance of things.

Depleted bloodline, they are dying out and childbirth is hard.

GNOME

An elemental being that governs and exists within the Earth. See: Elemental. Special Weakness for Air Magic.

GREMLIN

Often mistaken for gnomes or goblins in lore, the Gremlin is a small-boned cousin of a Brownie. They are delicate, like their cousin, and free-spirited. Gremlin's are miraculous machinists. Their understanding of all things mechanical goes beyond intelligence and into the truly supernatural. They can pick up anything and figure out how it works without much time needed. Despite the horror movie depiction in the film Gremlins, they are not actually ugly, twisted creatures. They are, however, dangerous.

Gremlins are carnivores and they crave the taste of blood and meat. Gremlin's will not eat lettuce and often dislike fruits or vegetables. To facilitate their lust for meat, their body has a much more horrifying form to shift into then their cute cousin. When the Gremlin shifts, they have a set of bat-like wings, talons that retract from their fingernails, and rows of razor-sharp teeth. A vampire, for instance, has sharpened canine teeth. A Gremlin doesn't just have the eye teeth pointed, but a full set on top and bottom.

The only thing that parallels a Gremlin's love of machines is it's curiosity. Gremlins are worse then cats when it comes to getting into things. Their obsession with the way things work combined with their unhealthy curiosity, has lead to the legends about them being the cause of many plane crashes.

Despite how frightening Gremlins can be, they are not specifically malicious. Most of their malignancy was a result of either hunger or sheer curiosity. They are almost child-like, naive to the fact that a lot of their impulses aren't exactly sweet.

It used to be that Gremlins were strictly Unseelie, but during one of the great wars between Seelie and Unseelie, it was decided that Gremlins couldn't be trusted not to switch sides. Rather then letting their genius fall into the hands of their enemies, the Unseelie slaughtered all of them. Gremlins are now killed at birth if accidentally spawned, by the Unseelie to prevent them from falling to the Seelie and by the Seelie for great fear of them going back to serve their dark masters.

Aversion to cold. Can freeze to death easily.

IMP

Imps are often alligned with demons but aren't actually. Humans called them demons only because they didn't know what else to call them. They are familiars. They assist in sorcery and may appear in the shape of a spider, fly, toad, cat or other creature.

Imps are usually found in the company of older women or witches or in the fae realm among the more powerful fae families. It is said that these women receive imps from Satan after making some agreement with him, but in truth, these imps choose their witches because they require magical energy to survive. They feed off of magical essence.

In return for performing services, the imp is allowed to suckle blood and energy from their owner. The spots where the imp feeds are called witchmarks or the devil's mark. The spots are raw and insensitive to pain.

Having an imp can be very advantageous for a witch. Imps can carry spellwork in their heads, spindling complicated spells in their consciousness so a witch doesn't have to consult a book. Imps can do menial spell chores, too, like drawing a circle or helping to light candles, but they are not magicians unto themselves.

Since imps are fae, though, they can be used as a focusing object to more wild magic, such as elemental magic. In addition, they have an inherent second-sight that allows them to see magical hot spots (places where magic is more potent because the Earth is connected to a place of power).

Imps do have a human form, but most prefer to stay in their animal form as to go unnoticed. Must sustain themselves on others. Will die without a host to feed off.

KELPIE

Kelpie is an unusual cousin of a siren. Like a siren, they are known to lure people into the sea. Sirens, reportedly, enjoyed sailors, predominately men. The water horse is a common form of the kelpie, said to lure humans, especially children, into the water to drown and eat them. The water horse would encourage children to ride on its back, and once its victims fell into its trap, the water horse's skin would become adhesive and the horse would bear the children into the river, dragging them to the bottom of the water and devouring them—except the heart or liver.

In mythology, Kelpies are described as a strong and powerful horse. Its hide was supposedly black (though in some stories it was white), and appeared as a lost pony, but could be identified by its constantly dripping mane. Its skin was said to be like that of a seal, smooth but as cold as death when touched. Kelpies were said to transform into beautiful women to lure men into their traps. They created illusions to keep themselves hidden, keeping only their eyes above water to scout the surface.

Kelpies are not touchy-feely, friendly creatures. Their only concern with humanity is their desire to devour them. Though most people think of a horse as friendly and majestic, these twisted version of horses are wicked and dark.

Can be harmed by fire or fire magic.

LEPRECHAUN

A Leprechaun is a small self appointed guardian of ancient treasures. They enjoy small, menial tasks (causing legends of shoe makers and Santa's elves), and will store away all the gold they earn in a great treasure. Leprechauns are the ultimate Scrooge McDuck. They hoard all their riches to the point of obsession and will notice if a single shilling goes missing. Due to this, Leprechauns are highly secretive.

These creatures are known to grant three wishes if captured but they fall under the same rule as the djinn. Any wishes are subject to moderator approval and you must take responsibility for contacting a moderator immediately whenever a wish is performed. They appear as wizened old men in bright clothes, typically red or green. They prefer to be solitary creatures.

They must find all lost treasure before they can move on. They are bound by their treasure.

MERMAID

A mermaid is a being with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish. They live primarily underwater and are found in the open ocean, at the sea shore, in freshwater lakes, ponds, rivers, springs, marshes, fountains, wells and other bodies of water. They have the ability to transform into human beings and live on dry land for a period of time.

The typical mermaid is described as a beautiful long-haired maiden with an irresistible singing voice; she uses her charms to lure men to their doom beneath the sea (like a Siren or Kelpie).

In addition to murder, they are also fond of enticing men into marriage. Mermaids are soulless creatures who disappear forever when they die, however, a mermaid can receive a human soul through marriage and/or by producing a child with a human. If a mermaid receives a soul, she will live on after the death of her body (Notably: they still have a human lifespan). Unfortunately these marriages usually end in great tragedy for one or both of the pair. Also, if a marriage who is a Seelie produces a child, she is likely to be shunned by the Seelie or possibly be put to death.

They grant supernatural powers to human beings, but generally have to be bribed or forced into doing so. They certainly don't run around just dishing out gifts. The desire to do so must be discussed with moderation.

This species is not specifically just females. They are most notable, but mermen and merbabies do exist.

NATURE SPIRIT

A being that embodies an aspect of nature. Unlike Elementals, nature spirits are creatures not necessarily of an element so much as details of nature. For instance, a nature spirit can embody a season, like winter (For instance: Jack Frost). They can embody birth, change or fertilization. There are a great many things that a nature spirit can be, but all of them, of course, are natural.

In many enchanted landscapes in movies or plays, the forest or house is alive with shifting lights and creatures with leaves for wings and sticks for hair. These creatures are all nature spirits. A lot of these were the birth of Pagan Gods such as Pan or Diana (Goddess of the Hunt).

In character creation, what type of nature spirit you are playing must be made perfectly clear with a list of advantages, disadvantages as well as what your character embodies. You will also have to come up with your natural form. Nature spirits hide their true form using Glamour. Thematic appropriate weaknesses. Frost will be hurt by fire, fire will be hurt by water, shadow can be hurt by light: etc.

PARI

An elemental being that governs and exists within the Fire (fire salamander). See: Elemental.

PUCK

Puck is really just a nickname for a lot of fairies. It is a name given most often (but not exclusively) to hobgoblins, brownies, Robin Goodfellow, nature spirits, and pucas. It is often the name given to fairies who are being particularly mischievous. There is no specific race of a puck, because it is just what people call (almost like a curse word) a naughty fairy of different types. Special weakness for water and water magic.

SELKIE

Selkies (or silkies or selchies) are fae who live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. Stories concerning selkies are generally romantic tragedies. Sometimes the human will not know that their lover is a selkie, and wakes to find them gone. In other stories the human will hide the selkie's skin, thus preventing it from returning to its seal form. A selkie can only make contact with one human for a short amount of time before they must return to the sea. They are not able to make contact with that human again for seven years, unless the human is to steal their selkie's skin and hide it or burn it.

Male selkies are very handsome in their human form, and have great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their life, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. If a woman wishes to make contact with a selkie male, she has to go to a beach and shed seven tears into the sea.

SIDHE

First thing's first, wipe out the Anita Blake version of Sidhe from your head. There may be some similarities, but this is not a race of sex-crazed maniacs.

They are sometimes known as the aos sí ("ees shee"), which are spirits of nature. A banshee is a form of sidhe, but not quite the same. These are the fairies who rule all other fairies. They are the Queens and Kings of their kind, not because it's their birthright, but because they are the most powerful. In the world only fairies are privy to that is adjacent to our own, they are known as the sluagh sidhe (the fairy host) because they preside over all.

Sidhe are dangerously beautiful, smart, composed, and violently powerful. Their powers of glamour are stronger then any other type of fae. Sidhe have an affinity with nature and can feel when it is thriving. When their environment is thriving, so do they. The only draw back for a sidhe is, if their environment starts to suffer (for instance if man cuts down their forest), so will they. They can perish this way. Like nature spirits, the Sidhe have the ability to make things grow, but unlike nature spirits they don't do it on purpose. If a Sidhe is in good health, so shall their environment be. Flowers will bloom out of season, fruit will be larger and sweeter, and so on.

SPRITE

Sprites are a lot like nymphs but are less hedonistic. They have the temperament of a pixie, but the powers of a nymph. They are often associated with forests, trees, the sea, etc. and are respectively known as wood-sprites, tree-sprites, sea-sprites and so on. They spend their time animating nature, making things grow and tending to whatever specific type of sprite they are. Potentially, a person may play a sprite in this storyline, but please lock down on what specific type of sprite that you are applying.

Can deplete more quickly then a normal fae when nature is depleted.

SYLPH

An elemental being that governs and exists within the Air. See: Elemental. Special weakness to earth and earth magic.

UNDINE

An elemental being that governs and exists within the Water. See: Elemental. Special weakness to air and air magic.

WICHTLEIN

A wichtlein (little wights or hausschmiedlein) are an unsightly goblin that announces death by knocking three times. A wichtlein is a mine-fairy, a little creature that haunts mines and announces the grave misfortunes or death of a miner. They announce lesser tragedies by making digging and pounding noises.

They enjoy throwing small stones at the miners just to tease them, not to hurt them, unless they deserve it. They watch the miners work and imitate them but never do any actual work. They look a lot like dwarfs.
